GNDC hosts a Petworth sidewalk cleanup, this Saturday, 9 am – 11:30 am!

Green Neighbors DC is calling all neighbors – or at least 20+ of us, for a New Hampshire and Illinois Avenues sidewalk cleanup, this Saturday, 9 am – 11:30 am. We just got permission from DC for this, we’ve arranged for trash bags and trash pickup, and the weather promises to be gorgeous that day. And we’re hoping it keeps that promise, as there is a bit of trash to pick up on those roads!

We’ll meet at the Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro station (at the top of the first set of escalators on your right if exiting the metro, i.e, the exit on New Hampshire Ave) at 9:00 am, where we will give out the trash bags and gloves, and then we’ll work our way up New Hampshire Avenue to Grant Circle Park, then onto the sidewalks of the surrounding streets, especially Illinois Avenue towards Sherman Circle.

You can work as long as you want, but the plan is to bring the bags to the SE corner of Webster and Illinois Ave, just north of Grant Circle, and end around 11:30 am.

We’ll provide ice water, a cart for recyclables, and at least two grabbers for those who can’t bend to pick stuff up very easily.

Children are welcome – but should be closely supervised in case of broken glass. Also, between the metro and Sherman Circle it is close to .75 miles, so keep that in mind for very young children.

Think of the adventure and potential scavenger hunt this may be! No telling what we’ll find. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to be money, although that has happened in the past. It is much more likely to be plastic bags and plastic bottles and plastic candy wrappers. (Subtle hint here – let’s stop using so much plastic.) But the sidewalks will look so nice when we’re done.

If you have any questions, please email us at greenneighborsdc@gmail.com. Please also let us know in advance, if you can, if you are coming. On site, Annette will be the organizer, and her cell is 571-345-6087.
